Reading bloglines this morning (during a break from writing my paper, of course), I came across this entry from Barbara Ehrenreich’s blog. An influential professor during my undergrad days once said to our class “college is not a trade school.” A professor in grad school (um, a couple of months ago) said to our class, “everyone should have a trade and a profession.”

Employment shouldn’t be denied someone if their skills meet the standards of the job, but their education level does not. (Though in the case of the MIT dean, I don’t know that I wouldn’t have fired her for lying.) Likewise, so-called overeducated people should not be denied employment, either, for having more education than their job requires.

I don’t really have any fully formed thoughts on the subject, but it’s interesting, nonetheless.
